Our Waldport Classroom

A welcoming home base—with the Oregon Coast as our extended care classroom.

Our Waldport classroom gives Recess students a consistent, thoughtfully designed place to learn, create, build, connect, and recharge before and after the school day, while regular field trips in Newport open the door to nearly endless opportunities for exploration, discovery, and real-world learning..

Newport Field Days

One of the greatest advantages of learning at Recess is access to the incredible variety of environments, organizations, and experiences surrounding the Newport area.

On field trips, students may learn at the beach, farms, tidepools, forests, estuaries, parks, museums, science centers, working waterfront, libraries, or within the broader community. One day might include collecting scientific data along the coast; another could involve wildlife observation, meeting a community expert, visiting a museum, investigating an ecosystem, or exploring a question that began back in the classroom.

These experiences are not separate from academics. They are intentionally connected to what students are learning through science, literacy, math, research, writing, art, engineering, and project-based learning.

With the classroom as our home base and the Oregon Coast just outside our door, there is always something new to investigate, experience, and discover.

A Home Base for Learning

After field experiences and outdoor adventures, students return to Waldport with new questions, observations, ideas, and experiences to build upon.

Here, children have room to read, write, research, create, engineer, collaborate, practice academic skills, and dive deeper into what they discovered in the field.

The classroom and our Newport field days work together as one connected Recess learning experience.

Previously At The Toledo Public Library

We opened our preschool in 2018 at the Toledo Public Library. Though we moved to Newport to expand our class offerings, we look forward to partnering with the Toledo Public Library again in the future to provide our fun community programs and events.
