Recess Family Field Trips bring children and the adults they love together for hands-on learning, outdoor exploration, and memorable experiences throughout the Oregon Coast and beyond.

From tidepools and forests to farms, museums, wildlife experiences, and seasonal adventures, our field trips give families opportunities to discover something new, learn alongside one another, and connect with the Recess community.

Learning Through Adventure

These aren’t simply outings. Each Recess Family Field Trip is thoughtfully planned around opportunities for children and families to observe, ask questions, explore, make connections, and experience learning together.

A Family Field Trip might include:

Who Can Join?

You do not need to be enrolled at Recess to participate.

Family Field Trips are open to Recess families and members of the wider community. Children attend with a parent, grandparent, or other responsible adult unless otherwise noted.

What to Expect

Most adventures are approximately 1–2 hours and take place throughout Lincoln County, with occasional trips farther afield. Space is intentionally limited, and advance registration is required.

We’re heading into the forest for a special Family Field Trip: Forest Science — Explore + Collect Live Data! 🌲🔎📋

Join us on Friday, September 25 for a hands-on adventure in a beautiful coastal forest near Yachats, Oregon. Families will hike together, explore, make observations, and help collect real data as a team.

This is a chance for children to experience science the Recess way — outside, hands-on, curious, and connected to the place we live.

During our adventure, families will have opportunities to:

Explore a coastal old-growth forest
Practice observation and field-science skills
Collect and record live data

Enjoy a beautiful hike with ocean views
Learn and explore alongside other Recess families

Fun Friday: Pumpkin Fun! 🎃

Join us on Friday, October 9 for a festive fall Fun Friday filled with pumpkin-themed activities, creativity, play, and hands-on fun!

✨ FREE to attend!
🎃 Please bring one pumpkin for each child participating. Any color/size is okay – we will be using it for activities – so not your special pumpkin.

Join us for a fun fall day at the pumpkin patch in Corvallis! We’ll spend time together exploring the farm, enjoying the autumn festivities, and making some sweet Recess memories. Admission includes a pumpkin for every child ages 2-17.

Family Field Trip: Watch Salmon Spawn!

One of our favorite fall traditions is back! Join us on Friday, November 13 as we head out to watch salmon make their incredible journey upstream to spawn. 🌲💦🐟

Families will explore the stream together while learning about the salmon life cycle, habitat, food sources, and current salmon research. We’ll look for spawning salmon, observe their behavior, and see the special areas of the stream where salmon create their nests, called redds, and lay their eggs.

This is a wonderful opportunity for children to see something they may have learned about in books or class happening right in front of them in the wild.

🐟 During Our Adventure, Families Will:

Watch salmon swimming and spawning in their natural habitat
Learn about the salmon life cycle
Explore what salmon eat and what they need to survive
Look for redds and signs of spawning activity
Learn about local salmon research and conservation
Spend time exploring and learning together outdoors
