Recess Extended Care gives children a safe, engaging, small-group place to begin and end their day.

Students have opportunities for academic support, creative projects, outdoor play, enrichment, independent activities, friendships, and time to simply unwind within a consistent and supportive community.

Waldport | 7:30 AM–5:00 PM | Before School + After School + Fridays

Transportation is provided between our Waldport classroom and Recess classes in Newport, making it possible for families to build a full-day schedule around their child’s Recess program.

Space is intentionally limited to preserve the personal, relationship-centered experience that makes Recess different.

A Full Day That Still Feels Like Childhood

Long school days don’t have to mean long hours sitting at a desk.

Extended Care is intentionally designed to give children a balance of structure and freedom, learning and play, activity and downtime.

Depending on the day, students might:

Work independently or with a teacher on academics
Read, write, play math games, or explore educational activities
Build, create, draw, craft, or work on ongoing projects
Spend time outside
Play games with friends
Explore books, puzzles, STEM materials, and classroom centers
Help care for classroom spaces, materials, plants, or gear
Eat, rest, talk, and decompress after a busy day
Practice independence and everyday life skills

There is room for children to be productive—and room for them to simply play, connect, and be kids.

Before School Care

A Calm Start to the Day

Before-school care begins at 7:30 AM in our Waldport classroom.

Rather than rushing immediately into structured academics, students have time to settle in, connect with teachers and friends, and ease into their day.

Mornings may include:

Quiet play and classroom activities
Reading
Drawing and creating
Games and puzzles
Independent projects
Preparing for the school day

Students attending Recess classes in Newport are then transported from Waldport to their morning program.

After School Enrichment + Care

Learning, Playing & Unwinding

After their Newport classes, students can return to our Waldport classroom for additional enrichment and care through 5:00 PM.

Afternoons are intentionally flexible.

Some children are ready to dive into a project. Others need movement, a snack, outdoor play, or quiet time before doing anything structured.

Teachers help students find the right balance while providing opportunities for continued learning throughout the afternoon.

Academic Enrichment

For elementary students, afternoons can also provide valuable time to reinforce and extend the learning happening during the school day.

Students may work on:

Reading and literacy
Writing
Math practice and games
Research
Independent projects
Science and STEM
Geography and social studies
Creative problem-solving
Project-based learning

Academic support is responsive to each student rather than built around a one-size-fits-all worksheet routine.

Fridays at Recess

For families who need care beyond the Monday–Thursday school schedule, Friday care is available in Waldport.

Fridays offer fun opportunities for:

projects, outdoor play, creative work, games, practical life skills, enrichment, big adventures, family field trips, and time together as a community.

Friday programming may vary throughout the year based on student interests, seasonal opportunities, and special Recess activities.

Transportation Between Waldport + Newport

Our Waldport classroom serves as a hub for families who need a longer school day.

Transportation is provided between Waldport and Recess classes in Newport, allowing students to participate in their Newport school program while having access to before- and after-school care in Waldport.

For many families, this creates one seamless Recess day:

Drop off in Waldport → Recess Field Trips in Newport → Return to Waldport → Pick up by 5:00 PM

We intentionally keep Extended Care enrollment limited.

Small groups allow our teachers to know children well, respond to individual needs, support friendships, help with academics when needed, and create an environment that feels personal rather than institutional.

Children aren’t simply filling the hours before pickup.

They are part of a community.
